Today, I’m going to teach you how to feel more motivated.
October 13th, 2022: Greetings from Hamburg, Germany
My friend Nils and I are making a new podcast.
He’s a brilliant ghostwriter building personal brands (and a start-up) on LinkedIn. So if you’re interested in digital ghostwriting, internet business, or persuasion, keep your eyes out in the next couple of weeks…. Episode #1’s already in the pipeline!
Recently, I’ve been lacking motivation.
Things are well. The business is generating revenue. And I’m living in a major European city— exactly as I dreamed.
But sometimes, I lack that oomph. That intense sense of drive and focus.
So I Looked to My Past
When did I feel most motivated? The clear answer:
Language Learning & Video Games
Why did I like them so much? Easy:
1. Curiosity
I’m curious about Germany and China. Learning the languages and making connections helped me satisfy my curiosity.
And the video games I liked best had vast worlds of never ending novelty to explore.
2. Improving a Measurable Skill
Languages are a skill that anyone can improve.
With effective methods, you can go from “hello” to having basic conversations in a couple of months. That’s thrilling.
Related to this, when I was a kid, I had two favorite video games:
NBA2K My Player
Grand Theft Auto
Why did I (and millions of other kids) love those games?
Because they had measurable skills, objectives, and achievements that you could see improve numerically.
GTA → Money, Missions, etc.
NBA 2k → Player Attributes, In-Game Stats, etc
There’s nothing like seeing the scoreboard rise.
3. Conquering a Challenge
Yesterday, I was at a cafe with sh-tty wifi.
As I was waiting to connect, I played the secret Google game:
The point is to jump over the trees.
It’s a simple game, but I noticed it’s only a game in the first place because there are trees to jump over. Without the obstacle, there is no game.
Similarly, as soon as I spoke fluent German, I got bored and needed something else to do. So there is an aspect of conquering challenges that feels fun.
I concluded 3 things that make me feel motivated are:
Satisfying My Curiosity
Improving a Measurable Skill
Conquering a Challenge
What else would you add?
I hope this helps you find motivation.
A closing point:
Instead of asking, “How can I be more motivated?” I’ve found it’s more helpful to ask, “What can I be naturally motivated to do?”
That’s all. Thanks for reading.
Being healthy.
