Robert Cialdini is the Regents' Professor Emeritus of Psychology and Marketing at Arizona State University. In 1984, he wrote Influence and the world was never the same.
Just kidding, but Influence is a book that shattered my worldview, and I recommend it to everyone.
In a nutshell
Cialdini spent years as a professor and undercover with salespeople and swindlers to study how we make and are persuaded to make decisions.
The book is flush with empirical and real-world examples— one of which affected me just one month before I read the book when self-described cult members scammed me for thirty Croatian Kuna.
In the end, he concluded there are six (updated for seven in the latest edition) principles of persuasion which influence us every day.
