“Do you have problems in your life that you’re not solving, that you could solve?”
Hey so the reason I’m writing you this is pretty embarrassing.
My friend from Twitter came to visit in Amsterdam…
My apartment is in the best neighborhood in town. Lots of lights and space.
But then we opened my fridge..
We had had a long day. Full of squash, movement and work. And then we got hungry. You’ll hardly believe it but the only thing in the fridge was a 5-month-expired jelly from the last renter.
There was simply no food!
Now you might say this makes sense because I just moved in or because I’m just a single guy living alone.
But believe it or not, this has been nagging my subconscious for weeks! It’s hilarious. But never bad enough that it took top priority.
In this moment it hit me in the face:
It’s MY FAULT that the fridge is empty. I am not living with my mother. Or anyone else. I am responsible for the state of my fridge.
And you might be thinking, obviously, who’s else could be? But when I say my fault, its like there was a childish part of me who just failed to accept that the empty fridge is my problem to solve. And I lived with pain.
And so once I realized it was my fault, I decided to take ownership over it. This morning we stocked the fridge. Non-negotiable to have food in the house, it was just crazy.
New belief unlocked: It’s my fault
I’ve now decided it’s a healthy belief to think every single in my life is my own fault. (My mentor Dickie told us this a long time ago but this was the first moment it really hit like a ton of bricks).
Because once you have ownership you can take action.
For example, even my thermostat. My friend and I were freezing because I couldn’t read the Dutch thermostat and this was something I was just living with!
He kinda joked dude WTF if you had a wife or kids they would freeze to death. And my trash needed to be taken out. And since TSA threw out my face wash I have nothing for my face and I’ve had a shitty iPhone charger for weeks that costs me time and headache.
It sounds neurotic but you can try this if you like.
Try it right now, if you sit with your eyes close and ask your self:
“Do you have problems in your life that you’re not solving, that you could solve?”
I guarantee you at least 5 will pop into your head and the main reason you haven’t solved them is simply a lack of urgency, agency or appreciation for your ability to solve these simple problems.
I’m going to go now and solve some more problems like getting a haircut and preparing my quarterly taxes.
Because I’m tired of having unsolved problems for no reason.
Talk soon,
Connor
